Abstract

662,353. Electric measuring systems. LAWSON, D. I. Feb. 24, 1949. No. 5072. Class 40 (i). [Also in Group XX] A fluid-flow meter comprises a loose cupshaped body 11 in a transparent pipe 10, the body being displaced by the flow against a restoring force increasing with the displacement, this force being exerted by an electromagnetic field. As shown the body 11 is of light weight and of high electrical conductivity ; eddy currents are induced in it by a winding 12 surrounding the pipe and supplied with alternating current, the body being thereby repelled from the winding. In a modification the body 11 is of non-conducting, non-magnetic material and carries a permanent magnet mounted so as to be repelled from the winding which in this case is supplied with direct current. The current in the winding may be varied by a rheostat 14 so as to restore the body always to a fixed point, the reading of the ammeter 15 providing a measure of the rate of flow. Stops may be provided to limit the motion of the body 11. For large flows the meter may be used in a byepass connection.
