[Class 37] A moving iron instrument has a soft-iron plate which is located to one side of a plane passing through the centre line of the pointer and is counter-balanced by a plate of non- ferrous metal mounted on the other side of the centre line. When a flat open coil f is energized by the current to be measured a disc d of soft iron or high-permeability alloy, which is secured to an axle carrying a pointer a, is attracted therein, and a non-ferrous disc e, which is secured to the opposite side of the axle, moves into the field of a permanent magnet g and damps the movement of the pointer.
