Abstract

662,169. Magnetic tests. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Jan. 18, 1950 [March 2, 1949], No. 5745/49. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for detecting flaws in a ferromagnetic cylinder 1, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a magnet 4, 5, 6 supported in a carriage 12, 13 which is supported by wheels 8, 9, 10, 11 set at an angle so that as the cylinder is rotated, the magnet moves longitudinally of the cylinder; the cylinder is thus magnetically scanned and variations in the local field are detected by any suitable means. In one mode, a tray 14 contains a fluid having a suspension of magnetic powder, so that the cylinder passes through the fluid and the magnetic powder collects along the line of cracks or flaws. A suitable fluid is paraffin or a solution celluloid in acetone, and a suitable powder is iron oxide. In another mode, the tray 14 is replaced by a coil of fine wire, the induced currents being measured. In a final mode, a galvanometer co-operates with an electromagnetic pick-up whose output can be recorded on a cathode-ray oscillograph.
