Abstract

A magnetometer for use on board an aircraft having means for compensating for parasitic magnetic fields comprises means delivering a voltage e 1 proportional to the total magnetic field at a point 1 distance x+ #x from the barycentre 4 of the perturbing fields, means delivering a voltage e 2 proportional to the difference between the total magnetic field at point 1 and the total magnetic field at a point 2, distance x from the barycentre, an adjustable-gain amplifier 16 for multiplying e 2 by a factor depending on x to generate a third voltage e 3 proportional to the intensity of the perturbing fields at point 1 with the same proportionalitv factor as e 1 , and means 18 for subtracting e 3 from e 1 to generate a voltage e 4 proportional to the magnetic field being measured. In Fig. 5, the output of a magnetometer 3 of the nuclear magnetic resonance spin oscillator type is amplified at 7 and fed to a frequency meter 5 which produces the voltage e 1 . The output of amplifier 7 is also fed to a nuclear magnetic resonance filter 8 which produces a phase shift proportional to the difference in field strength at points 1 and 2. The output of filter 8 is amplified at 14 and compared in phase meter 11 with the output from amplifier 7 to produce the voltage e 2 . Alternatively, a second spin oscillator (3a), Fig. 8 (not shown), may be used instead of nuclear filter 8, a differential frequency meter (31) being used instead of phase meter 11. Coils (28), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be energized to make the barycentre of perturbing fields due to eddy currents coincide with that due to ferromagnetic masses. Preferably, points 1 and 2 lie on the fore-and-aft axis of the aircraft. Theoretical details are given.
