Abstract

776,861. Electric measurements. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES, Ltd. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 3, 1953], No. 33557/53. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXIX] Apparatus for measuring the current density in a conductive liquid, e.g. the electrolyte of a plating process, comprises two similar toroidal coils 14, 15 (Fig. 1), wound on coaxial, highpermeability cores 10, 11, and jointly coupled by a short-circuiting winding 19 and a D.C.- fed winding 20, whereby the change in impedance in the windings 14, 15 connected in series opposition when immersed in the conducting liquid due to the polarizing effect of the liquid current 13 through the middle 12 of the cores 10, 11 is balanced out by a measured current through the winding 20, which is a measure of the liquid current 13. The impedance of windings 14, 15 is measured in a bridge circuit (Fig. 3) by comparison with similar coils 14a, 15a on similar cores 10a, 11a, initial balance being effected outside the conducting liquid by adjustment of potentiometer R5, subsequent rebalance in the liquid being obtained by adjustment of potentiometers R6, R7 controlling the D.C. through coil 20. The assembly of cores 10, 11 and windings 14, 15, 19, 20 is enclosed in a non-magnetic, non- conducting sheath, e.g. polythene, and the apparatus may be used with any conducting fluid.
