Abstract

813,303. Strain gauges. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 19, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 22905/57. Class 40 (1). In an electrical strain gauge the resistance wire is covered with a friction material so that it makes frictonal contact with the surface of the specimen to be tested without being bonded thereto, and is carried by a handle which includes an indicator to show the thrust of the friction material on the specimen. In Fig. 1 the wire 40 is embedded in a channel in the lower surface 38 of a rubber block 36 and the whole coated with a friction material 50, e.g. emery dust or fine grit. The variation in current through the wire is amplified at 52 and indicated on an oscilloscope 48. The block 36 is attached to a plunger 20 the other end of which passes through a hole in a casing 16 and is spring-loaded at 22 against the rounded top of the casing. A slot 28 has marks 30 which register with a line 32 on the plunger to indicate the load on the spring and hence the thrust on the specimen. The instrument can be placed in various positions on the specimen so that numerous readings can be taken quickly. The quantity measured may be stress or may be the frequency or amplitude of vibrations.
