A device for measuring the compression characteristics of an article 11 of compressible material comprises an elongated member 26 adapted to extend through the material, a graduated scale 27 fixed to member 26, a flat plate 14 slidable along the member and means for indicating the relative position of the plate 14 with respect to the member 26. The member 26 slides in a tube 19, connected to the plate-14 and carries two scales 27, 28, one of which is marked in inch graduations to show the height of the upper surface of the material, while the other has the same graduations spaced at 3/4-inch intervals. In use, the article is pierced by the member 19 and the rod 26 allowed to reach the supporting surface. The height of the upper surface is then read off from the scale 27, by the position of the upper end of member 19, i.e. as shown in Fig. 1, it is six inches. Weights are then added to the plate 14 until the upper end of member 19 is level with the corresponding graduation on scale 28. The article has then been compressed by 25 per cent and the weight required to do this is a measure of the compressibility of the article.
