Abstract

650,262. Testing physical qualities of materials. WALLACE & CO., Ltd., H. W., and MORE, A. R. Jan. 23, 1948, No. 2079. [Class 106 (ii)] A pocket hardness tester comprises a casing having a base, or member 14 attached to the base, shaped to rest on the specimen to be tested (not shown), a penetration member 11 guided vertically in the casing and urged downwardly, so as to project through the base, by a spiral torsion spring 16, and a rack-andpinion 20, 21 or toothed quadrant gearing connecting the member 11 with an indicator. As shown, the downward movement of the member 11 is limited by the member 14, and the spring is mounted on an arbor 17 which can be adjusted from outside the casing for calibration of the indicator comprising a needle 8, Fig. 3, moving over a dial. To determine whether the spring is correctly adjusted, the casing is inverted and a pivotal support 26 for a check weight 27, which presses on the member 11, is removably secured over a plate 29 integral with the member 14. The indicator dial may be movable instead of the needle 8.
