Abstract

800,421. Linear-dimension gauges. KING- TON, C. N. Jan. 6, 1955 [Jan. 6, 1954], No. 380/54. Class 106 (2). An instrument for measuring the thickness of sheet material has a body 1 shaped to provide a slot 2 for receiving the sheet to be measured, having opposed parallel guide sur. faces 5, 18 to limit tilting movement of the sheet, a pair of freely rotatable balls 6, 7 carried by the body near the open end of the slot and relatively movable along their line of centres for engaging opposite faces of the sheet, and indicating means 13 responsive to relative movement of the balls. The body 1 is elongated to form two jaws 3, 4, the lower jaw 4 housing a fixed cup in which the lower ball 7 is free to rotate, and the upper jaw 3 carrying a dial gauge 13, the plunger of which abuts a spring-loaded cylinder and which carries at its lower end the upper ball 6. The guide plates 5, 18 extend from the upper and lower edge of the slot 2 at right angles to the body 1. The dial gauge 13 can be rotated about its vertical axis and is secured in any desired position by a clamp. The instrument may be hand-held or mounted on a bench.
