Abstract

445,812. Linear - dimension gauges. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Pratt & Whitney Co. ; 436, Capitol Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) April 12, 1935, No. 11346. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a construction of calliper gauge for continuously measuring the thickness of sheet material. A bracket 11 is adjustable laterally over a support 10 and carries by means of a parallel linkage 13, 14 a gauging head 12 which is counter-balanced by springs 15 attached to the bracket and link member 14 and may thus be moved vertically to accommodate itself to varying vertical positions of the strip W due to increasing thickness of the winding roller. An arm 16 pivotally mounted on an axis within the head 12 is acted upon by a spring 17 and carries at the free end a gauging roller 18 opposed to a similar roller 18 carried by the head, the sheet material W passing between the rollers. At one side of the head is mounted an anvil 21 movable vertically within small limits to vary the position of a flexibly supported armature located between two opposed coils within the casing 20. Opposite the anvil 21 is a screw adjusted anvil 24 mounted within the arm 16. A clamping screw 27 locks this anvil. On the head, adjacent the rollers 18 is a movable anvil 29 directly opposed to an anvil 30. The former is moved by rotating a graduated dial 31 past a fixed mark. The spindle carries a pointer 32 moving over a scale 33 indicating complete rotations of the spindle. A standard gauge block 35 is first placed between anvils 29, 30 and the disc 31 made to read zero. The rollers 18 should now be just in contact, if not, the spindle is adjusted to make them contact and the scales adjusted to zero. With the gauge block 35 in position, the spindle 29 is adjusted so that the rollers are separated by a gap corresponding to the thickness to be measured. The spindle 24 is then adjusted until the position of the armature is such that the instrument 36 reads zero, when the apparatus is ready for measuring departure from standard as the sheet is passed through.
