Abstract

738,022. Testing the hardness of paint and like surface coverings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 17, 1954 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 31967/52. Class 106 (2). A device for measuring the hardness of paint films and like surface coverings consists of two discs 1 connected by spacing bars 2 and carrying an eccentrically positioned weight 3, the assembly being called a " rocker," and is characterized in that it is fitted with an escapement mechanism which indicates the number of oscillations made by the rocker, each oscillation of which having an amplitude greater than some particular amplitude, and in that means are provided for setting the rocker into motion with a predetermined initial amplitude. A spindle 4 carrying a hand 5 at one end, a winding knob 7 at the other and a spiral spring 8, the other end of which is fixed to a pin 9, passes through the discs 1 and a toothed wheel 6 frictionally mounted on the spindle engages with a pallet 12 fixed to a second spindle 10, on which is also fixed a weight 11 which acts as a pendulum for the escapement mechanism. In operation the spring is wound by the knob 7 during which operation the wheel 6 remains stationary, the hand 5 is zeroized on a scale 13, the device is placed on the surface to be tested, tilted as far as a stop 14 will permit and is then released. As the rocker oscillates the pendulum 11 tends to hang vertically and, as a result of the relative motion between the rocker and the pendulum, the escapement mechanism is actuated. With each oscillation of the rocker, the wheel 6 rotates one tooth. This continues until the amplitude of oscillation of the rocker has decreased to a value beyond which the relative movement between the rocker and the pendulum is insufficient to actuate the escapement mechanism. The hand then indicates the number of oscillations made by the rocker, the amplitudes of which all lie within a given range, and this number is proportional to the hardness of the specimen under test.
