Linear-dimension gauges.-A measuring in. strument, specially adapted for measuring the summer growth of wood with reference to the total width of wood made, comprises two scales E, D, and a single cursor H so arranged that as the cursor is moved over a series of distances, a pointer G shows on the scale D the total distance traversed, and a pointer F shows on the scale E the sum of selected distances within the series. The scale D is attached to a plate A which is slidably mounted on a pillar N of a base plate M, and is slotted to receive a slide B upon which the scale E is marked. The slide B is slotted to receive a slide C which carries the pointers F, G and the cursor H. A magnifying eye-piece P is arranged over the cursor H, which may be of any suitable form. In use, the piece of wood to be measured is placed upon the base M, and the plate A is lowered until a pin K engages the wood. An adjustable pin L is engaged with the wood to hold it rigid. The cursor is then traversed across the zones corresponding to alternate summer and winter growth in sucession, the distance corresponding to winter growth being traversed by operating a micrometer nut S which moves the slide B, and the distance corresponding to summer growth being traversed by operating a nut T which moves the slide C. The scale E may be calibrated in percentages of a total movement shown by the scale D. The apparatus may be used in connection with textiles, and several secondary slides C may be provided. The arrangement of the scales &c. may be modified.
