Abstract

290,913. Kegel, K. Nov. 19, 1927. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus. Apparatus for estimating the ash or mineral content of coal &c. comprises a weighing machine having means for determining the volume as well as the weight of the specimen, and a computing scale on which the ash &c. content can be read off when the weight and volume are known. The volume-measuring apparatus b supported by one scale-pan c of the weighing machine a consists of a wide liquid-containing tube d communicating with a narrow tube e in which the height of the liquid is read. For reading this height a slidable graduated rod h is provided with a needle-point extension g passing into the tube e, the needle point being brought to the surface of the liquid. The device b having been first balanced by weights added to the pan f, the sample is introduced in a basket &c. into the tube d; the weight is then shown by the indicator p and the volume is read on the rod h. The computing scale n is marked with curves x of equal volume and curves y showing percentages of ash. The appropriate volume curve is followed to its point of intersection o with the indicator p, this point corresponding, in the example shown, to an ash content of about 6 per cent.
