688,554. Linear dimension gauge. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 24, 1951 [May 25, 1950], No. 13222/50. Class 106 (ii). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for measuring the thickness of sheet material 2 comprises a nozzle 6, Fig. 1, emitting a fluid, e.g. air, jet against the surface 3 so that the nozzle is maintained out of contact with the material 2, and the force exerted on the nozzle by the emission of the fluid is balanced by a further force. As shown, this further force is the magnetic attraction between the magnet 5 mounted on the nozzle and the cylinder 1 bearing the material 2. In Fig. 1, the flow of the fluid jet is varied at 7 until the jet takes up a position of balance, the thickness of the material 2 being related to the rate of fluid flow. In Fig. 3, the pressure is constant, and the balance position of the nozzle and magnet is measured by measuring the reluctance of the magnetic circuit 5, 1.
