Abstract
781,929. Weighing apparatus. SAUNDERS F. S. BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS CORPORATION, and ALLTOOLS, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1956 [Nov. 26. 1954], No. 34338/54. Class 143 [Also in Group XIX] In a hydrostatic weighing scale a load bearing plunger 18, which bears on the fluid in a chamber 14 through a flexible diaphragm 19. is guided by plates 37 which make line contact with the plunger and the casing 15. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the plates are triangular in plan and are arranged symmetrically about the axis of the plunger with their bases engaging the flat faces of square cross-section recesses 36 and their apices engaging curved seats 42 on bearing members 43 screwed into the casing. Rubber rings 40 are provided to locate the bases. Screws 44 limit movement of the plunger in the event of the scale being inverted. The chamber 14 conimunicates through passages 24, 26 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) with a weight calibrated pressure gauge and an air bleeding valve respectively. In a modification the triangular plates are replaced by rectangular plates 137 which each make line contacts with flat surfaces 142 on a pair of screws 143, and with the cat surfaces on plunger, the outer ends of each plate being located by a further pair of rubber rings 144 arranged above and below the plate. The casing 115 is formed in one piece and has a recess in its base (not . shown) for engaging a sealing bead on the diaphragm. The Specification states that the device may be used as a thrust meter with the plunger extending horizontally. Specifications 564,287, 617,429 and 627,536 [Group XIX] are referred to.
