671,865. Linear-dimension gauges. McPHIE, A. D. May 19, 1950, No. 12658/50. Class 106 (ii). A gauge for measuring the angle of taper of a hole comprises two members 12, 13 having three-point contact with the internal wall of the hole by means of steel balls 14. A conventional micrometer thimble 9, co-operating with a scale 8 measures the distance d between the members when both are in contact with the wall of the hole in concentric relationship. Then if γ 1 and γ 2 be the radii of discs 12, 13, respectively, where A is the angle between the side of the hole and a line b parallel to its centre line. Thus the distance d as indicated by the scales 8 and 9 will be inversely proportional to the angle of taper A. In a modified form shown in Fig. 3 annular members 18, 20 are employed in place of the discs 12, 13 and steel balls 14.
