Abstract

527,663. Gauging-apparatus. EXON, E. W. April 18, 1939, No. 11708. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a particular construction of three-point contact gauge for measuring the thickness of a fillet of material at the junction of two angularly disposed surfaces welded together. A curved yoke member 1 is provided with a curved groove 2 in each side face struck from the centre formed by the common meeting point of two outer limbs 5, 5a and a central leg 12. The leg 12 forms part of a micrometer 4 while the outer limbs 5, 5a are, as shown, at right angles and are mounted in carriers 6, 6a each of which is provided with a pair of arcuate arms 7, 7a which engage the grooves 2. Locking nuts 8 secure each arm in adjusted position. The limbs are constituted by bars mounted in undercut grooves 9, 9a and have graduations on the outer surface by which the distance of the end from the common meeting point may be read off. Angular scales 3 are provided on the yoke 1. In use, the micrometer is screwed back and the limbs drawn back and set to the angle of the plates. The limbs 5, 5a are now adjusted to touch the legs of the fillet and the micrometer screwed down to the throat. The readings of the scales on the legs are taken and the longer adjusted to agree with the shorter. The instrument is now placed so that the points of the limbs rest on a plane surface and the micrometer screwed down. The reading of the micrometer is then compared with its first reading to give the thickness at the throat.
