Abstract
716,248. Linear-dimension gauges. SORENSEN, G. E. May 15, 1951, No. 11371/51. Class 106 (2) A linear-dimension gauge adapted for finding the distance between centres of spaced circular holes, and similar measurements, comprises a beam, graduated for direct reading of the distance, having a stop or abutment for zeroizing purposes, and carrying two slidable jaws, one jaw having an index or datum mark and each having a work-sensing point. In a first embodiment, designed for finding the distance between centres of two circles, W, w, Fig. 1, scribed on a flat surface, two jaws 10, 11, Fig. 3, are first brought right up to a stop 39 on a graduated beam 35, so that an index 29 coincides with zero on the scale. The jaw 10 is clamped and jaw 11 then moved away until the work-sensing points 12, 13, Fig. 4, coincide with the nearest points Nn of the circles. The second jaw 11 is now clamped and the first jaw 10, Fig . 5, brought up into abutment with it and again clamped. The jaw 11 is again released and moved away until the worksensing points 12, 13, Fig. 6, coincide with the furthest points Ff of the circles. The scale is graduated to read off directly the distance between centres. In another embodiment the work-sensing points are adapted for engaging vertical faces, e.g. when finding distance between centres of round holes. The index 29 may be marked on the first jaw, the position of the scale and the measuring procedure being modified accordingly. Studs may be formed on the jaws to provide accurate abutment surfaces.
