Abstract
The position of a hole in a manufactured piece part is measured with respect to a face on a direct reading instrument which overcomes problems of part measurement and part calculation which are often difficult due to chamfers. The measuring instrument comprises a graduated scale (10) on which a cursor (13) and vernier (14) slide. The cursor carries a heel (15) with a face (17) which is perpendicular to the cursor travel and which can pivot (16) through an angle in the vertical plane. The heel buts against a face (c) of a piece part while a probe (18) at the head (20) of the scale enters a hole (A) in the piece part. The probe can be raised or lowered as required and measurement between probe and face (c) is read directly from the scale and vernier.
