634,277. Joists, beams, spars, trusses &c. CAWOOD WHARTON & CO., Ltd., and RILEY, J. D. Jan. 2, 1948, No. 168. [Class 20 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIII] A structural member comprises a pair of booms 10, 11 and subsidiary members 110 as required, adapted to withstand the longitudinal compressive and extensive forces set up in the member, spaced intercostals 12 extending between the booms, and webs 14 of hardboard (as defined by British Standard No. 1142/1943) affixed to the opposite faces of the framework formed by the booms and intercostals to form a hollow box-like structure. The booms and intercostals may be of soft wood with heavier intercostals 13 of block formation at the ends and points subject to localized stress, and the hardboard web is glued to the framework using a waterproof gap filling adhesive, e.g. synthetic resin or formaldehyde glue, with or without pins. The hardboard is conveniently damped down overnight before the glue is applied. A wood floor and plasterboard &c. ceiling may be attached to the upper and lower booms respectively, or the members may be used to form a roof truss, as shown in Fig. 3, with reinforcing blocks 15 and gussets 16. Beams are joined at rightangles by a shoe 18 attached to the booms by lugs 17. Preferred dimensions are given.
