Abstract
562,601. Girder bridges. HAMILTON, A. M. Jan. 1, 1943, No. 18. [Class 20 (i)] For increasing the depth of lattice bridges constructed from standardised members connected together to form bays which are repeated many times throughout the structure, unitary web bracing members which extend between the upper and lower booms are used, the booms being made of the members provided for a single depth structure. A bridge structure of the Warren type formed from standardised parts is formed of chord members 2, 3 connected; together by unitary diagonal web members 4, which cross each other and are connected to gusset plates 5 attached to the chords. Where two or more beams are disposed side by side for 'increased strength, upper channel-shaped connectors 7 are disposed between the gusset plates of the beams, connecting them together, and at the bottom I-shaped beams' 7 connect the lower gusset plates. Vertical members 25, 21 may be disposed between the intersections of the main diagonals and the upper or lower chords respectively in each beam and when used with the lower chords, may be provided with outward inclined strut members 23. The end portals are formed of uprights 11 cross connected on each side by plates 12 and the main web diagonals and the chords on each side may be connected by plates 12 and 15 respectively. The compound chords at the upper portion of the bridge may be interconnected by diagonals 16 and the pairs of channel-shaped connectors 7 for the gusset plates may also be connected together by further diagonal bracing members. The road support 8 may be carried between the lower or upper compound chords of the bridge. Intermediate cross supports 10b may be provided between the main cross supports 7 in the lower portion of the bridge where desired. Rails to facilitate launching of the bridge may be welded to the upper and lower chords. Specification 423,926 is referred to.
