733,288. Wooden girders. GERLACH, H. Aug. 28, 1953 [Aug. 30, 1952], No. 23763/53. Class 20 (4). The compression and tension braces 1, 2 of a lattice structure connecting the upper and lower booms 4, 9 of a wooden girder are arranged in the same plane and are joined to each other at 5 in such a manner that the vertical and transverse components V, S, Fig. 3, of the compression and tensile forces induced in the braces 1, 2, intersect at the centres 3 of the joints and cancel each other, no secondary stresses being produced in the booms so that only the horizontal shearing force H need be taken into account when the truss is designed. The adjacent ends of the braces, joined by wedge-shaped tenons 7 which are glued into corresponding grooves 6, are secured by nails 8 to the booms 4, 9, each of which comprises two members (see the upper members 41, 4<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 5). In a modification, the booms are each composed of three members between which two lattice structures are arranged. The girder may be made to have the shape of a trapezium, triangle or arch.
