Abstract

754,380. Bridges. STOREY (ENGINEERS), Ltd., T. April 6, 1955 [March 25, 1954], No. 8678/54. Class 20(1). A bridge of the type in which the decking or roadway 51 is supported upon transome beams 26 releasably secured to main girders 20 built up of prefabricated panels 21, is provided with reinforcing members, 28 superimposed upon the top chords of the panels and detachably secured to the latter as well as to the associated end posts 33 and to one another, and each such reinforcing member has seatings 27 to which the transome beams are clamped. As shown, the bridge has two main girders 20 comprising unequally spaced parallel trusses built up of panels 21 connected endto-end by pins 22, and the members 28 are bolted to the said top chords. The end panels are connected by pins 22a to posts 33 and the posts are supported on bearings 42. The transome beams are clamped down in juxtaposed pairs by a double clamping device, and the endmost beam is clamped on the heads of the end posts. Further transome beams 266 are clamped on seatings on the bottom chords of the main girder panels to brace the structure. Stringer units 50 carry transverse chesses 51 of the bridge decking, and the outer edges of the decking are supported by modified stringer units 53 comprising interconnected I-section joists 54 having dependent frames 57 which are supported by the reinforcing members 28. The roadway edges have kerbs provided by ribands 63. Instead of the single storey main girders described, double storey girders may be used. Two or more such bridges may be arranged side-by-side and with kerbs to provide a multi-lane roadway, or the rebated ends of the chesses 51, Fig. 13, may accommodate longitudinally disposed timbers 64 bolted to reinforcing channels 65, thereby providing a substantially continuous roadway. The timbers 64 may support a single railway track. Alternatively the adjacent ends of transome beams in the adjacent bridges may be overlapped and supported on a common main girder 20, Fig. 14, In that case the chesses 51 may be continuous from side-to-side of the decking, or the inner edges of the two deckings may have ribands 63.
