Abstract

1,209,747. Portable bridges. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 18 Jan., 1968 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 56343/66. Heading E1G. Hollow light-metal girder sections 2, Fig. 3, which are manually connected end to end to form a crane jib or the side girders of a portable bridge are provided at each end with two locating means - a tapered slot 16 and a complementary transverse roll bar 17. The rotatable roll bar 17 may be flexibly mounted. Adjacent sections are rigidly connected by a transverse bar 13 passing through intercalated tongues 12, and by vertical bolts passed through tapered dowels 8 engaging apertures 9. Each girder section may have connections 24 for carrying-bars 23, and locators 21, 22 for a bridge-deck. In a bridge construction the two assembled side girders are connected by end beams and rolled into position across a river with the assistance of a long nose beam attached to the forward end beam. In a modified bridge construction. Figs. 6, 7, the girder sections 2 carrying the deck 5 and kerbs 6 are reinforced by portable triangular girder sections 30, Fig. 8 (not shown), which have end locating and connecting formations similar to those of the section 2'. Similar locating and connecting formations may also be provided on the junction posts 32, end taper panels 31, end beams 3, ramps 4 and transverse bracing members 33 of the modified bridge. Assembly and interconnection of the upper and lower girder sections 2, 30, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), is facilitated by the use of a fork-ended rod. The modified bridge may be used with fixed or floating piers, possibly with several spans pivotally connected by junction posts.
