Abstract

600,129. Piers and landing stages. PAVRY, R., HOULDER, J. M., HASWELL, J. H. R., and WAKEFIELD, W. A. Sept. 27,1945, No. 25156. [Class 68 (ii)] [Also in Groups X and XXXIII] Piers and landing stages are constructed by pre-assembling a composite structure comprising pontoons 1, 1A, equipped with retractable spuds 5 working in guides 12 and interconnected by bridge spans 2, floating this structure into position, lowering the spuds to the bottom and then raising the structure on the spuds to the required height by means of winches 10. After erection the winches may be relieved of the load by screw-operated wedge devices 13 which can be adjusted to grip the sides of the spuds. Additional piles 38 may be driven through guides 37 or pressed into the bottom by trans- ferring the weight of the structure from the spuds to the piles by means of winches, the piles finally being cut and capped with caps bolted to the guides 37 and further secured by spikes. The structure may then be wholly supported on the piles if desired. The pontoons consist of box-like watertight units 4 bolted together and provided with halves of Bailey bridge pin joints by which they are connected to the bridge span which consists of four Bailey bridge girders 2 each comprising five Bailey panel units 3. The four girders are interconnected by transverse bracing panels 14 and support a roadway comprising transomes 15, stringers 18 and decking 20, foot walks 22 and kerbs 21, the transomes and stringers being secured by clips 16 and 19 respectively (Fig. 4). Adjacent structures in a long pier &c. are not rigidly connected, the gaps between them being bridged by sliding deck panels allowing relative movement. The pontoons may not form part of the finished structure in which case they are initially secured to the sides of the bridge spans the latter then carrying guides for the piles by which they are ultimately supported. A modified arrangement of bridge girders and pontoons is described for a pier-head, and a dolphin comprising two interconnected pontoons only with spuds &c. also described. Suitable dimensions are given. Specification 553,374, [Group X], is referred to. The construction of bridges by similar means (see Group X) is also described.
