A steel and concrete bridge deck or beam (Fig. 9, not shown) comprises a steel platelike or lattice web 4 having outstanding shear connectors 8 on both faces along opposite marginal portions embedded in the concrete 2, 3. The shear connectors may be in the form of headed projections welded to the web, or may be constituted by transverse prestressing elements, e.g. cables or rods passing through apertures in the web. In the bridge described, the concrete embedding the marginal portions of the web forms upper and lower decks connected by webs 4 extending both transversely and longitudinally of the bridge. The upper deck has a side walk 5, Fig. I (not shown) and the deck structure is carried by piers 1.
