Abstract

The compound ply-wood section may be used as a beam or other load-bearing member in building and bridge construction. Lightweight high strength members of uniform or variable cross-section with homogeneous and consistent structural characteristics are obtained. Typical fabricated sections are of 'I' or box section and inter-member connections may provide continuity or otherwise. Connections may include gussets of plain or reinforced ply-wood, and may incorporate bolts, nails, pins or glue. Constituent ply-wood sheets in built up sections, e.g. with webs (1) or flanges (2) of multiple sheet construction, may be laid end to end or gapped in the major plane, with sheet-joints staggered to avoid localised weakness.
