Abstract

553,374. Building frameworks ; bridges. BAILEY, D. C. Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13219. [Class 20 (i) and 20 (ii)] A bridge or like framed structure is formed of prefabricated unit frameworks, which may be assembled end to end, side by side, or in superposed relationship according to the strength required, each unit being formed as a rectangular braced member comprising upper and lower chords united by members forming a web. The framed units comprise chord members a, b, each formed of opposed spaced channel bars, the chords being connected by lattice members c of I or H section for web members, the units being provided with male and female end units d, e so that they may be united, end to end. The chords are also provided with apertures g to receive the connecting bolts f when the units are superposed, and also with dowels i which are adapted to engage spaced apertures in cross girders for supporting a road, the cross girders being clamped by quick-action clamps m. When a single line of units is used as a side member to a bridge, they may be supported by raking struts n but if a double line is used they may be interconnected by further unit members o which form spacers. Cruciform fittings may be provided for joining members in different planes. Alternatively the units may be joined together by independent members which hinge together to form a hinged joint. For a bridge the deck l is supported by longitudinal joist p supported by transverse bearers k carried at their ends by the side members of the bridge.
