Abstract

The rectangular hollow beam is fabricated from timber, and panels constituting the two webs and the two flanges comprise battens or planks (1') which are glued together end to end and side by side. The beam ends may be closed (5) by transverse panels of a similar construction. The longitudinal joints between web and flange panels may be made by simple glueing or by edge-bevelling and glueing. The internal faces of the panels may have prefixed reinforcements in timber, metal or similar. Holes for structural connections may be provided at the beam ends, and larger cellular sections may be formed by combining box sections utilising strap or sleeve fasteners.
