Abstract

963,141. Building beams; roofs. R. E. FEAKINS. July 15, 1960 [July 24, 1959], No. 25431/59. Heading E1V. A beam for use in modular building systems comprises tongued and grooved longitudinal members secured to the longitudinal edges of a web, and buttress members formed from tongued and grooved parts, spaced along the length of the beam and each secured to one or the other sides of the web and to the opposed faces of the longitudinal members. In the beam shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings accompanying the Complete Specification, the longitudinal edges of a web 5 engage in grooves formed in the faces of tongued and grooved longitudinal members 1, and buttress members, each comprised by short lengths 2, 3 of the stock employed for the longitudinals 1 with gussets 4 in the face grooves, are spaced along the length of the beam being secured to the web and to the longitudinals. In Fig. 8 (Complete) three parallel webs 5 are each provided with a pair of longitudinal members 1 which interlock with the longitudinal members on the adjacent web or webs, the central web being provided with buttress members which are common to the outer webs. Boxed beams may be constructed by providing cladding 30, Fig. 2 (Complete), carried by short struts 11 secured along the edges of the longitudinal members 1. Two or more beams may be secured together by struts 11, Fig. 3 (Complete) extending transversely of and secured to the longitudinal members 1. The webs of the beams may be formed from a member divided by a zig-zag cut to form two similar components 5, 5a, Fig. 11 of the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification which can be re-assembled to form a perforate web of depth greater than the width of the undivided member. A beam formed with a spaced pair of parallel webs may be provided with a laminated bowed member 6, Fig. 3 (Provisional) between the spaced webs secured to longitudinal members at its ends and in the middle. In a roof construction a duct may be provided above the bowed member 6 to carry rainwater from an inlet to the duct provided adjacent the centre of the member 16 to an outlet near an end of the member 16, Figs. 11 and 12 (Complete, not shown). A beam may be placed with its web 5 horizontal as in Fig. 13 (Complete) to form a gutter in a building e.g. for a roof valley. The Specification also describes a number of other composite beams constructed from beams according to the invention, and discloses beams according to the invention used in the construction of, walls, roofs and floors, a facia and soffit and a roof light opening. Various service conduits may be incorporated in the beams. The beams may be made of or may include wood, plastics or metal.
