Abstract

The beam is made up of a number of sections generally cut to the same width and depth. The sections are cut to different lengths so that better quality wood can be used more cheaply than if the beam was made from a single piece. The horizontal surfaces to be joined have a series of large notches or teeth (GZo) running longitudinally in the direction of the beam and matching teeth in adjacent sections. Different lengths are joined by small section teeth (FZ) cut vertically into the end faces, while all joints are reinforced by gluing.
