Abstract
631,190. Vacuum pumps. DISTILLATION PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 4, 1946, No. 35846. Convention date, Jan. 16. [Class 71] A high vacuum diffusion pump comprises one or more ejector nozzles 28 located within a pump casing 2 and arranged to deliver vapour from the pump fluid 34, upwardly through chimneys 12 and 18, to an umbrella jet 20. Gases from the system to be evacuated are entrained in these vapours and are forced downwardly between the nozzles 28 and their corresponding diffuser tubes 32, the gases being them entrained in the high velocity vapour streams which pass through elbows 26 into the nozzles 28 and are first forced into the diffuser tubes 32 and finally into a conduit 10 from which they are removed by a backing pump. The condensed working fluid which collects on the walls of the casing 2 and diffuser tubes 32 flows by gravity into the body of the pump fluid 34. In an alternative form, the ejector nozzles are replaced by a single annular nozzle which delivers into an annular diffuser having its outer wall secured at its upper edge to the casing 2.
