Abstract
589,475. High vacuum pumps. EDWARDS & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., W., TILLS, J. W., and POTTS, F. C. March 26, 1945, No. 7532. [Class 71] A fluid stream vacuum pump in which the low vapour pressure working fluid is directed into a forevacuum region under atmospheric pressure comprises a downwardly directed nozzle and flash boiler unit 1 centrally disposed within the cylindrical pump casing 2 that has a forevacuum connection 3 and a high vacuum connection 4. Working fluid is supplied through the conduit 5 to the flash boiler and nozzle 1 from the tank 6 which is open to atmosphere at 6a. The base of the pump body 2 is formed into a receiver 7 for collecting condensate which may pass through the valve 8 into the tank 6 for re-use on breaking the vacuum within the pump. The working fluid pressure may be increased by disposing the tank 6 above boiler and nozzle unit 1. The Provisional Specification describes a modification wherein the cylindrical pump body is divided into an upper and lower compartments by means of a division plate and has a cylindrical or conical tubular body extending axially from the upper part which forms a high vacuum connection into the lower compartment, the flash boiler and unit being located within this axially extending body. Working fluid is stored in the upper compartment and conducted by atmospheric pressure to the boiler and nozzle unit by means of a pipe; a forevacuum connection is disposed just below the division plate in the lower compartment.
