Abstract

587,800. Liquid seals. EDWARDS & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., W., TILLS, J. W., and POTTS, F. C. Dec. 12, 1944, Nos. 24845 and 25324. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XL] An arrangement for jointing high vacuum connections of vessels evacuated by a fluid stream vacuum pump having an organic working fluid, comprises a mechanical seal, formed by ring 18 and grummet 19, between the atmosphere and an intermediate region connected by tube 37 to a prevacuum, and a liquid seal, formed by the wall 20c dipping into an annuiar trough around the condenser body 16, between this intermediate region and the high vacuum interior of the envelope 20, with means for continuously or intermittently supplying the seal with working fluid from the pump. Fluid from the pump flows upwards through the standpipe 31, hits low-pressure jet deflector 29 and enters seal on the high vacuum side, and overflows by way of the port 36a back to the boiler 15b of the pump.
