Abstract
634,956. Rotary air pumps. BEST, C., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Dec. 12, 1947, No. 32802. [Class 110(ii)] In a sliding vane pump of the type in which water is fed from a container for sealing purposes and in which a sump is provided on the suction side of the pump, an inner chamber having an open top extending above the maximum water level is located within the sump 1 and is in communication with the passage 3 leading to the suction side of the pump chamber 4. The inner chamber is in the form of a pipe 2 which is screwed in or cast integrally with the sump body. One or more small holes 5 connect the pipe with the interior of the sump. The amount of water which is drawn into the pump on starting is limited to the quantity within the pipe 2, and is disposed of before the pump vanes have attained such a speed that they would fracture on striking the water. To prevent water from the pipe 2 from enter ing the suction line 9 if the pump reverses on stopping, a sheet metal shield 6 practically divides the sump into two parts and is bent over at 7 to form a baffle to direct water downwards.
