Abstract

850,112. Hydraulic turbines. ETABLISSEMENTS NEYRPIC, ATELIERS NEYRETBEYLIER & PICCARD-PICTET. Feb. 18, 1958 [Feb. 18, 1957], No. 5304/58. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] The noise of operation of an hydraulic turbine having a chamber formed between the turbine casing and the upstream side of the wheel which is subject to a pressure above atmospheric by the flow of water through the turbine, is quietened by introducing into the chamber an emulsion of air and water in sufficient quantity to damp the pressure pulses created by the operating turbine and feeding the emulsion from the chamber into the central portion of the water flow downstream of the rotor. The chamber formed between the hub disc and casing of an inward radial flow hydraulic turbine is supplied with an emulsion of air and water by an injector, Fig. 1, which comprises a hollow cylindrical body 10, the upper end of which is provided with a ball valve 11 and the lower end with a convergent nozzle 12 discharging into a mixing pipe 13 connected to the turbine casing 21. An arcuate pipe 15 fed with liquid from the turbine inlet has its outlet end coaxial with the axis of the body 10, formed as a jet nozzle 17. Radial partitions 18 and a central tube 19 are arranged inside the nozzle 17. When water flows through the pipe 15 it passes from the nozzle 17 in the form of a plurality of jets 22, Fig. 2, which are separated by gaps 23, 24 to which air is supplied through the valve 11. An annular gap 25 also forms an air passage. This air mixes with the water in pipe 13 to form an emulsion which is then fed to the turbine. The emulsion is led from the chamber through the nose of the rotor hub to the suction pipe. The central tube 19 may, if desired, be dispensed with.
