623,745. Gaseous fuel furnaces. STEVENS, A. H., (Gas Machinery Co.). June 19, 1946, No. 18424. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a furnace heated by radiant tubes fabricated in sections, said tubes 34 are made of silicon carbide with, optionally the addition of a little ceramic material as a binder, and each joint 42 is a ball and socket joint with part spherical abutting surfaces of radius R, Fig. 2, where R is preferably substantially larger than the radius of the tube sections. Supports 38 fixed to the inner wall of the furnace chamber are preferably located at the joints 42, which joints may be sealed by a material 65 which is plastic in the working temperature range. Each end tube section 34<SP>1</SP> fits in a recess 46 in the end wall 45 co-operating with a burner 47, while each end tube section 342 passes through the end wall 43 at 50 and seats in a recess in a flue member 51, said flue member having a tube 53 supplying steam or compressed air, &c. to assist ventilation. Pressure is applied to the flue members 51 by springs 62 working through levers 55 pivoted at 59, or in a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) tension springs attached to members 51 and to the furnace end wall have the same effect, and in this case leakage from or near the end tube 342 is prevented by a metal bellows fitted over the joint and also attached to the furnace end wall. The furnace chamber is a removable hood structure with a peripheral base plate 22 from which a depending flange 23 dips into a sealing trough 24.
