Abstract

29,813. Lambot, J. Dec. 27. Open-hearth furnaces.-In a gas-fired tilting- furnace of the open-hearth type, the air and gas ports are formed in a detachable head 2 secured to the furnace and are connected to the regenerators by flues 3, 4, the former of which tilts with the head 2 about a ball-and-socket joint, while the latter opens into its port in the tilting-axis of the furnace. The gas port 7 is surrounded by'a water jacket 6, and a tight joint is made at the junction with the flue 4 by a sleeve 8 and a ring 9 of sheet asbestos. The weight of the air flue 3 is taken by a support 11, and the joint is formed by a water jacket 16, Fig. 3, having two flat and two part-spherical surfaces, a frame 18 lined with refractory material and supported at its lower end in a sand seal 17, and a flange 19 of sheet asbestos.
