Abstract

606,829. Pipe joints. STORRIE, S. Jan. 21, 1946, No. 1918. [Class 99 (i)] In a pipe joint of the type in which a pipe end is expanded to tapered form for compression between tapered components of the joint the tapered end is further expanded to form an out-turned flange whose outer face is engaged by a flat annular surface on a component of the joint and whose inner face does not abut against anything. Fig. 2 shows pipes 16, 17, the tapered ends 18, 19, of which engage a double-tapered ferrule 10. For compressing the pipe ends on the ferrule a gland 13, a sleeve 15, and a coupling nut 14 are provided. The out-turned flanges 20, being engaged on their outer faces by the plane ends of the sleeve 13 and gland 13 respectively, prevent withdrawal of the pipes from the joint. The various components are so dimensioned that the inner faces 20a of the flanges do not abut, this allowing further tightening of the joint after it has become loose through use. The sleeve 15 has an expanded part 22 at one end and an annular projection 21 at the other, these parts serving to limit the movement of the nut 14 on the sleeve.
