[Class 103 (i)] In an automatic brake-operating mechanism for a trailer vehicle of the kind in which the brakes are normally applied, but are released in response to a pulling or pushing effort by the tractive vehicle, the brakes are normally applied through a cable 17 by a spring 21 but are released on application of a pushing or pulling effort to the draw-bar 7 by means of a lever 13 pivoted at 13e to the towing bar 5 and at 14 to a member connected to the cable 17, or by a lever 12 pivoted at 12e to the towing bar 5 and in mesh with lever 13 at 12b, 13b. On the draw-bar 7 are secured two collars 10a, 10b, which by engaging the forked-end 12a, 13a of the levers 12, 13 release the brakes when pushing and tractive efforts respectively are applied to the draw-bar, these efforts being transmitted to the towing bar 5 through springs 11b, 11a bearing on the draw-bar guides 6b, 6a respectively, and also by direct engagement of members 8 and 9, fixed to the draw-bar 7 with members 6a, 6b respectively. Nuts 19a permit adjustment of the normal braking pressure applied by spring 21. Lever, 22 enables the brakes to be released manually while the hinged plate 23, by engaging a shoulder 7b on the eye of the draw-bar 7, permits the brakes to be held off.
