Abstract

374,474. Brakes ; railway vehicles. JONKHOFF, H. W., 2A I, Berger Ufer, Dusseldorf, Germany. March 12, 1931, No. 18005/30. [Class 103 (i).] Applied by weight of vehicle and by backward pressure of tractor or relaxation of pull.-The body of a vehicle is suspended from the understructure in the manner of a pendulum whereby the brakes are automatically applied by relative movement of these parts on inclines or when the vehicle tends to over-run the tractor vehicle. The structure 1 carried by bogies 3a, 3b, capable of longitudinal movement against the action of springs 12, supports by links 10, a platform 2 carrying the vehicle body. A lever 4 pivoted to each bogie is connected by a cable 6 to the brakes. If by reason of the braking of the tractor vehicle the drawbar 11 together with the bogie 3a is pushed rearwardly compressing one of the springs 12, the lever 4 is pressed against a spring stop 5 on the platform 2 and the brakes are thus applied. In descending a hill, the platform swings forwardly on the links 10 by gravity action and thus applies the brakes and it is necessary for the tractor to pull on the draw-bar 11 to release them. The brakes on the rear bogie are not applied in these circumstances except by the push of a second trailer, transmitted to the rear draw-bar 11. In ascending a hill the platform 2 moves rearwardly but the rear stop 5 does not engage the rear brake lever 4 to apply the brakes by reason of the lag of the rear bogie 3b but if the vehicle tends to run backwardly, this bogie moves inwards relatively to the platform 2 so that the lever 4 is actuated and the brakes applied. The stops 5 can be set to a position by screwed rods 9 to render the brakes inoperative.
