Abstract

321,304. Seeleke, H. Oct, 16, 1928. Applied by backward pressure of tractor; railway and like continuous rope; back struts.-A trailer brake is applied by a widely forked lever 8 pivoted at opposite sides of the forecarriage at 9 and connected at its two upper ends 10 to a forked draw-bar 7. The lower end of the lewer 8 may be connected directly to the brake gear, or the brake gear may be coupled through a link 16 to a second lever 15 pivoted to the lower end of the lever 8 and connected by a cable 18 to a place near the driver's seat to enable the driver to apply the brakes by hand when required. The cable 18 also ensures the application of the brakes should the trailer become uncoupled. The lever 15 has a detent 20 to hold the brakes on when they have. been applied by a pull on the cable 18. As an alternative means of applying the brakes should the trailer become uncoupled on a steep hill, a sprag 23 pivoted to the lower end of the lever 8 and normally held off the ground by a cable 24 connected to the preceding vehicle, drops when the cable 24 is broken, and by engaging the ground ensures movement of the lever 8 as the vehicle moves backwards. Means for temporarily anchoring the lower end of the lever 8 to the vehicle are provided to enable the tractor to move the trailer backwards when required.
