Abstract

443,807. Trailer vehicle brakes. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., New Road, Wandsworth Road, London. Sept. 4, 1934, No. 7417/35. Divided out of and addition to 443,784 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect 91 of the Acts, Sept. 30, 1935. [Class 103 (i)] Brake mechanism for trailer vehicles wherein the brakes are applied by the thrust-pressure or overrun of the trailer when the towing vehicle is retarded and in which a non-fluid shockabsorber is provided for ensuring smooth operation of the brakes as described in the parent Specification is adapted for two-wheeled vehicles. The draw-bar 1 is connected by a link 3 and a lever 4 to an extension 2 of the undercarriage, the lever 4 being connected by a cable 19 to the brakes. The shock-absorber comprises a damper-bar 8 attached to the drawbar and slidable between spring-pressed jaws 9 adjustable by nuts 10, the lower jaw being attached at 14 to the extension 2 or to the axle. The brake may also be applied by hand by a lever 22 mounted on the pivot 13 of the lever 4 but offset from that lever as shown in Fig. 4 and having a lateral extension 23 for engagement with that lever. The lever moves between a bracket 20 and a ratchet 18 with which a locking pawl 27 engages. To prevent application of the brakes as during reverse movement of the vehicle, an arm 15 of the link 3 has a hole through which an L-shaped pin 26 can be inserted for engaging the extension 2. Accidental disengagement of the pin is prevented by a projection thereon which is passed through an extension 25 of the hole 24. The brakes may be operated from the driver's cab by a cable attached to the cable 19.
