Abstract

443,784. Trailer vehicle brakes. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., New Road, Wandsworth Road, London. Sept. 4, 1934, No. 25448. Convention date, March 28. [Class 103 (i)] Trailer-vehicle brakes of the kind that are applied by the overrun of the trailer when the towing vehicle is retarded comprise a lever connected to the trailer draw-bar and connected to the brakes, a second lever pivoted to the first lever and also connected to the brakes and a non-fluid frictional shock-absorber for preventing too sudden application and release of the brakes and comprising a damping device disposed in the central plane of the first lever. The lever 3 pivoted at 4 to the trailer forecarriage 1 is connected at 5 to the draw-bar 2 and by the chain 24, rod 22 and equalizer bar 21 to the cam-shaft levers 16 of the brakes. The lever 3 as shown is of U-form at its upper part. The shock-absorber comprises a damper bar 25 connected to lever 3 and sliding between a pair of spring-pressed friction members 26, 27, the pressure being adjustable by nuts 38. The brakes may also be applied by the lever 7 pivoted at 8 to the lever 3 and connected by the chain 23 to the rod 22. The lever 7 may be operated by hand or by a chain 11 extending to the towing vehicle whereby the brakes are applied in the event of the trailer breaking away from the tractor. The lever 7 may be locked in an applied position by a pawl operated by a lever 10 and engaging a ratchet 6 on the lever 3. Operation of the brakes by the lever 3 can be prevented when desired by the engagement of a pawl 42 with a stop 40 on the rod 25. The pawl may be controlled from the driver's cab by a cable 43.
