Abstract

295,725. Schlagenhauf, J. Aug. 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Actuated or applied by backward pressure of tractor or relaxation of pull or push. - Brake mechanism for trailer vehicles operated by the drawbar so that the brakes are automatically applied by the closing in of the trailer upon the tractor vehicle comprises a spring device whereby excessive movement of or pressure' applied to the drawbar such as occurs when the vehicles are backed effects the release of the brakes. According to one construction, the drawbar 1 of the trailer vehicle is connected to arms 2 secured to a transverse rock shaft 3 upon which are freely pivoted a pair of arms 10 between which are mounted a pawl 7 normally rigid by a spring 5 into engagement with an arm 4 secured to the shaft. A cable 12 connected to the trailer brakes and to a lever on the tractor to permit operation of the brakes by the driver, carries a block 14 for engagement with an eye 11 on the pawl 7. If the trailer moves forward relatively to the tractor the consequent rotation of the shaft 3 is transmitted by the arm 4 to the pawl 7 and a pull is thus exerted on the cable 12 and the brakes applied. If the trailer is backed the pull applied to the cable 12 becomes sufficiently great to effect the disengagement of the pawl and the release of the brakes. The pawl 7 can also be disengaged by means of a sharp pull applied thereto by the driver through a cable 13. In a modification, Fig. 7, the arm 4 has pivoted thereon a bellcrank lever 20 upon one arm of which presses a spring 5 while the other arm has a pin 22 in engagement with a slotted link 24 to which its connected the brake cable 12<11>. A cable 12 leads to the tractor. In this case when the trailer overruns the tractor the pin 22 remains at the top of the slot and applies a pull to the cable 12<11> to apply the brakes, but if as when backing this pull becomes excessive the pin slips along the slot with consequent release of the brakes. The brakes may be applied by the driver by the cable 12.
