[Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A motor-vehicle brake is applied by move. ment of the clutch pedal beyond that which effects disengagement of the clutch and a distantly controlled locking device is provided for holding the brake applied. The pedal 1 mounted on shaft 2 carries a cam member 3 which by engagement with a roller 11 on the end of a lever 4 pivoted at 5 releases the clutch through a Bowden cable 6. When the clutch has been released and the roller 11 comes on to the part 10 of the cam which is concentric with the shaft 2, so that the clutch re-engaging force is ineffective on the pedal, a pin 7 engages a recess 8 in an arm 9 connected as by a Bowden cable 12 to the brake whereby the brake is applied. The arm carries a rack 14 which can be engaged by a pawl 15 against the action of a spring, under the control of a cable 18 operable from the dash-board or steering wheel. After the brake has been locked on the pedal may be returned to re-engage the clutch. The brake may be released by first depressing the pedal to permit the disengagement of the pawl. The device may replace the usual hand emergency or parking brake.
