Abstract

740,721. Trailer vehicle brake systems. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. April 10, 1952, No. 18766/53. Divided out of 740,688, [Group XXXII]. Class 103 (1). The invention relates to the arrangement of the braking system on the trailer of a tractor-trailer combination of the type described in Specification 740,688, wherein the trailer has temporary supporting wheels at its front end which are displaceable from an operative to an inoperative position by the coupling of the tractor to the trailer vehicle. Fig. 1 shows the manual brake control on the trailer which is provided by a hand lever 50 pivoted at 48 and acting through links 46 and 42 upon a cable 45 attached to conventional braking means. The brakes of the trailer are normally held applied, when it is not coupled to the tractor, by a leaf spring 41, 52 the ends of which act upon the inner side of buffer blocks 55 to cause arms 56 to press upon the flanges 24 of a slidable member 17. As shown in Fig. 5, the slidable member 17, which has a projection 19 at one end for engagement by the brake transmission 23, 20 extending from the driver's control in the tractor cab, abuts at the other end a bell crank lever 27 having an arm 29 which acts upon a rod 30 passing through the trailer front wheel pivot centre to cause a further bell crank lever 34 to move the slidable bar 39, Fig. 1, so as to cause the lever 42 to pivot about pin 43 and apply the brakes through the cable 45. In this arrangement the action of the floating lever 42 allows independent operation either by the hand lever 50 or the tractor driver's control through cable 23. As shown in Fig. 4, when the tractor is coupled to the trailer, buffer parts 59 press back the ends of the leaf spring 51 so that the arms 56 take up the positions shown dotted in which the bar 17 is free to move either way.
