Abstract

1367764 Trailer braking system; spring applied brakes; transmitting mechanisms MASSEYFERGUSON-PERKINS Ltd 27 Oct 1971 [4 Nov 1970] 52348/70 Heading F2E A trailer 1 has wheel brakes 12a, 13a urged to a brake-applied condition by springs 10, the springs 10 being overcome to release the brakes 12a, 13a when a mechanical release arrangement on the trailer 1 is connected to the power lift of a tractor 17 and the power lift is raised. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the release arrangement comprises a bell-crank lever 6 carried on a bracket 5 attached to the trailer drawbar 2 and also connected to a brake rod 9 through a connecting rod 7 and a transfer lever 9a which receives the brake applying force of the springs 10. The forces transmitted by the rod 9 are transmitted through a double bell crank equalizer 11 to actuating rods 12, 13 for wheel brakes 12a, 13a. The bell crank lever 6 carries a link 14 and when the trailer 1 is coupled to the tractor 17 by a tongue 3 and coupling pin 4, the link 14 is also connected to a bridge piece 15 fastened to both lower links 16 of the trailer powerlift. A control 18 acts via a ram 19, lift arms 20 and lift links 21 on the lower links 16 whereby as the lift is raised the link 14 and rod 7 are pulled to a new position and the brakes 12a, 13a are released. The bridge piece 15 is positioned directly above the coupling pin 4 and the bracket 5 is positioned adjacent the tongue 3 to prevent unintentional brake operation during movement of the tractor-trailer. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the link 14 and rod 7 are replaced by a cable (23) running over a pulley (24) and the transfer lever 9a is replaced by a lever (25) having a horizontal pivotal axis.
