Abstract
1341724 Trailer over-run brakes JONAS WOODHEAD Ltd 18 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 2728/71 Heading F2E Operation of the over-run brake of a trailer is prevented during reversing by the insertion of a lockable extensible link 5 in the braking connection 4, a manually operable brake connection 7 being provided which by-passes the lockable link so that manual braking is retained regardless of the condition of the link, e.g. when the trailer is parked. The extensible link 5 comprises a piston moving in a cylinder and including a solenoid-operated valve by means of which the piston may be rendered free in the bore or locked in position in it to transmit braking force as described in Specification 1,334,673: For reversing, the link 5 is unlocked electrically. Normal operation of the arrangement is as follows: The ball-hitch 12 of the towing vehicle is connected to a hollow ram 13 including a telescopic damper 16 connected to fixed arms 19 on the trailer frame 1, 2. Over-running by the trailer causes ram 13 to press levers 22 pivoted at 23 to operate the brake linkage 4 connected at pin 24 to the other ends of the levers. A hand brake lever 6, indexed by ratchet plate 33 pulls at pin 37 and clevis 36 on the bypass link 7 which reaches to a point 39 at the other end of the lockable link 5, or in a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) to the trailer brake actuating lever. It may be additionally secured by cable 41 fastened by hook 43 to the ball hitch 12.
