Couplings for road vehicles.-In trailer vehicles having a longitudinally slidable coupling hook connected to the brakes so that they are applied when the trailer over-runs the tractor or other preceeding vehicle a strong spring or buffer is so disposed as to urge the vehicles apart and thus prevent the application of the brakes on the trailer except when the forward vehicle is abruptly slowed or in the event of the coupling breaking. A screw 2 mounted on the tractor vehicle 1 and actuated by bevel gearing, 3, 3<1> carries a nut with a flanged part 5 supporting a coupling hook 6 which is slidable in guides on the coupling bar 7 of the trailer vehicle. The hook 6 is connected by the cable 8, lever 10, and rod 12 to the brake 14. A spring 9 applies the brake when permitted to do so by the inward movement of the coupling hook 6. Upon the coupling bar 7 is mounted in guides 18 a rod 16 urged forwardly by a spring 19 strong enough to hold the tractor and trailer vehicles apart when the tractor vehicle is gradually slowed, If however the tractor vehicle is abruptly slowed, the spring 19 is overcome and the consequent inward movement of the coupling hook 6 causes the brakes 14 to be applied. The buffer 16, 19 may instead be mounted upon the tractor. If the coupling breaks the brakes 14 are automatically applied.
